Services
Drug Addiction and Alcoholism Treatment Services fall into five main categories:
- Detox
- Outpatient
- Residential / Inpatient Treatment (drug rehab and alcohol rehab)
- Aftercare
- Intervention
Detox [ detoxification from drugs and alcohol ]
When an individual is physically addicted to drugs and or alcohol it is most often necessary for the individual to first receive medical attention in detox setting. It is here where under medical supervision, the individual will begin to stabilize and go through the physical symptoms of withdrawal.
There are many types of detoxes for varying substances - Drug Rehabs New York has a complete list of detoxes in NY and the types of treatment services that they provide.
Outpatient Drug and Alcohol Treatment Services
For an individual to be appropriate for outpatient services the use of drugs or alcohol has impaired the individuals functioning enough so that they meet generally recognized criteria for a substance-related disorder.
Outpatient services vary in the amount of time required for treatment and can be broken down into two categories:
Outpatient - less than 6 hours a week
Intensive Outpatient - at least 9 hours a week (<less than 4 per day)
In both of these treatments the individual is able to stay at home and engages in treatment services either in the day time or evenings.
Residential / Inpatient Treatment (drug rehab and alcohol rehab)
When an individual lacks the motivation or social support system to remain free from drugs and alcohol, but does not require the structure and medical services of a hospital - then a drug rehab program or alcohol rehab program is appropriate.
There have been many advances in the delivery of residential drug rehab services. The treatment programs that are often most effective are ones that provide thorough diagnosis, individualized care and aftercare planning. Here at Drug Rehabs New York we have a comprehensive listing of all the drug and alcohol rehabs in NY.
Aftercare
Aftercare is the type of support system and framework in place for the individual after they leave treatment (either inpatient residential or outpatient treatment). Treatment for drug addiction and alcoholism is a life changing experience and the steps made immediately following treatment are equally as important then the initial steps to enter treatment. Professional aftercare planners are addiction treatment professionals that take into account the various bio-psych-social criteria of each individual and are able to develop personalized plans that cater to goals and social interests.
Intervention -
Interventions for individudals in active drug addiction and alcoholism have become very popular in recent years. Historically there was a belief that for an addict or alcoholic to accept the fact that they are in need of help - that they must fully exhaust themselves and hit, what is referred to as, "rock bottom". Unfortunately many alcoholics and drug addicts expose themselves to high risk and life-threatening behaviors and never reach this juncture - that is where an intervention comes in. An intervention is done by an addiction and alcoholism professional with extensive experience in treatment and has a network of treatment professionals and drug rehabs available to assist in helping the individual. The level of intervention is unique to each situation and ranges in the degree of involvement. In most cases the interventionist will provide the family with education and map out the course of treatment. After an intervention is performed the interventionist physically accompanies the individuals into the first and second treatment juncture and will follow up with the treatment professionals and individual for specified periods.
